After IPL, India-Afghanistan ODI Highlights Dharamshala's World-Class Cricket Infrastructure and HPCA's Vision
The India-Afghanistan ODI at the HPCA Stadium, Dharamshala on June 13 offered cricket fans another reminder of why the venue is regarded as one of the most iconic cricket destinations in the world. After more than fourteen hours of relentless rainfall, HPCA’s Dharamshala Stadium restored its outfield to match-ready condition in under thirty minutes - a remarkable demonstration of world-class infrastructure, advanced turf science and exceptional groundsmanship.
At the heart of
this achievement lies the SIS Air vacuum drainage system, making Dharamshala
one of only two cricket venues in the world equipped with an active
air-assisted water evacuation system beneath the playing surface. Unlike
conventional drainage systems that rely solely on gravity, this technology
actively removes water from the rootzone through controlled negative air
pressure, significantly accelerating recovery following heavy rainfall.
The system
continuously monitors moisture conditions within the profile and can optimise
drainage performance during adverse weather, helping maintain a safe, firm and
consistent playing surface. In addition to rapid water removal, it enhances
rootzone aeration and turf health, contributing to year-round performance at
one of the world’s most unique cricket venues.
India registered
a seven-wicket victory over Afghanistan to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match
series. Afghanistan posted 194 in 24.5 overs, which India chased down with
ease, reaching 195/3 in 22.5 overs. Adding to the festive atmosphere of the India-Afghanistan
ODI, HPCA's technologically advanced drone show emerged as a major success. The
aerial spectacle showcased themes of cricket, national pride, Himachal
Pradesh's rich heritage and iconic depictions of Lord Mahadev, captivating
spectators and enhancing the overall match-day experience.
Nestled against
the majestic Dhauladhar mountain range, the Dharamshala Cricket Stadium has
long been celebrated as one of the most picturesque venues in international
cricket. However, beyond its breathtaking beauty lies a modern sporting
facility equipped with advanced drainage systems, high-quality turf management
practices and international-standard infrastructure that enables seamless
hosting of top-level cricket even in challenging weather conditions.
Under the
leadership of former HPCA President Anurag Singh Thakur, a bold dream was
pursued - to bring world-class cricket to the hills of Himachal Pradesh. What
was once considered an ambitious aspiration has today become a reality, with
Dharamshala regularly hosting international matches, ICC tournaments and Indian
Premier League fixtures.
The recent IPL
matches hosted at the venue further reinforced Dharamshala's growing stature as
a premier cricket destination, attracting thousands of visitors and generating
significant tourism and economic activity across the region. Hotels, transport
operators, local businesses and tourism stakeholders continue to benefit from
the global attention that cricket brings to Himachal Pradesh. Dharamshala
hotels witnessed a 600% IPL-driven surge ahead of the matches, boosting the
local economy.
Recognising its
outstanding standards, the HPCA Stadium, Dharamshala, received the Pitch and
Ground Award in the category for venues hosting up to four matches during IPL
2026.
Over the years,
HPCA has evolved into far more than a cricket association. Through investments
in infrastructure, grassroots development, women's cricket and talent pathways,
it has helped position Himachal Pradesh prominently on the global sporting map.
